The earliest version of the Cosmopolitan is said to have appeared in the 1970s. One story attributes it to a bartender named Cheryl Cook in South Beach, Miami. Cook claims to have created a pink drink with vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and lime to appeal to female patrons.

The cocktail gained popularity in the 1980s, particularly in New York City. Bartender Toby Cecchini is often credited with refining the recipe. While working at the Odeon in Tribeca, Cecchini adjusted the ingredients’ proportions and helped popularise the drink.

The Cosmopolitan became widely recognized in the 1990s due to its frequent mention in the TV show “Sex and the City,” where it was a favorite drink of the main character, Carrie Bradshaw. The show’s influence solidified the Cosmopolitan’s place in popular culture and cocktail menus worldwide.

Today, Cosmopolitan is known for its crisp, refreshing flavour and vibrant pink color. It remains a staple in cocktail bars and is celebrated for its blend of vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and lime juice.
