🍇 Abouriou

Abouriou is a traditional French red wine grape variety. It was once more widely planted. However, it has seen a steady decline in commercial use over time 🍷. Today, it is rarely bottled as a single-varietal wine. Instead, it is primarily valued as a blending grape. Its strengths can support and enhance other varieties rather than stand alone.

The grape is particularly known for its deep colour and generous fruit character 🍒. Wines containing Abouriou often show dark hues. They exhibit ripe berry notes. This makes it useful for adding intensity and structure to blends. These qualities have historically made it attractive to winemakers looking to boost colour, body, and aromatic richness in their wines.

As vineyard plantings shifted toward more internationally recognised grapes, Abouriou gradually fell out of favour. However, it has not disappeared entirely 🌿. In certain regions, winemakers continue to use Abouriou. They appreciate the specific balance and depth it brings to traditional blends and the finished wine. Its role is quiet but purposeful — contributing behind the scenes rather than taking centre stage.
