Angostura

Angostura is a concentrated flavouring agent made in Trinidad, originally derived from the bark of the Galipea officinalis tree. It is best known as Angostura bitters, a staple ingredient in cocktails. The bark contains an extremely bitter compound. Various spices and herbs blend with this compound to create a unique, aromatic flavour profile.

Angostura bitters are not beverages themselves but are used in small amounts as a flavour enhancer. Just a few drops can transform the taste of a cocktail or dish. They are most famous for their use in classic drinks like the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, and Pink Gin. They are also added to fruit salads and other recipes.

The product originated in the early 19th century, created by Dr. Johann Siegert, who developed it in Venezuela as a medicinal tonic. After its success, production moved to Trinidad, where it became a hallmark of cocktail culture. The name “Angostura” refers to the town of Angostura (now Ciudad Bolívar) in Venezuela, near where it was first made.

While primarily used in cocktails, Angostura bitters also enhance the flavour of savoury and sweet dishes. Its versatility and distinctive bitterness make it an indispensable ingredient in both culinary and mixology traditions worldwide.
