Daiquiri

The Daiquiri is a classic cocktail with a rich history that traces back to the late 19th century in Cuba. Its creation is often credited to an American engineer named Jennings Cox, who was working in the small town of Daiquiri near Santiago de Cuba.

The balance of sweetness and acidity makes the Daiquiri a beloved choice among cocktail enthusiasts. Origins

Cox supposedly invented the cocktail in 1898 when he ran out of gin while entertaining guests and turned to the local rum. Wanting to improve the rum’s harsh taste, he mixed it with lime juice and sugar. This simple concoction was well-received, and he named it after the town where it was created.

Popularization

The Daiquiri was introduced to the United States in the early 20th century, where it quickly gained popularity. It became a favorite of many, including the famous writer Ernest Hemingway and President John F. Kennedy. Hemingway even had a variation named after him, the “Hemingway Daiquiri,” also known as “Papa Doble,” which was made without sugar and with a double shot of rum.
