Darjeeling 🍃🏔️

🍃 Darjeeling Tea — the Champagne of Teas 🍃

Darjeeling is a hill town in the state of West Bengal, northern India. It is nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. The town is wrapped in mist, tea gardens, and colonial history. Darjeeling is best known worldwide for its tea. It has earned the nickname “the Champagne of teas”. The name is not for bubbles, but for its elegance, rarity, and unmistakable character. 🌫️🍵

Darjeeling tea is grown at high altitude. Cool temperatures, steep slopes, and monsoon mists slow the growth of the tea plant. This results in delicate leaves with complex flavours that range from floral and muscatel 🍇 to lightly nutty and brisk. Unlike stronger Indian teas, Darjeeling is prized for finesse. This quality makes it one of the most sought-after teas in the world.

The region’s tea estates date back to the British colonial era. Many remain in operation today. They still use traditional plucking and processing methods. Seasonal harvests, known as flushes, play a crucial role in flavour — with the prized second flush delivering the classic muscatel notes tea lovers chase year after year 🍂✨

Beyond the cup, Darjeeling represents place and provenance. Its tea is protected by a geographical indication. This means only tea grown in this specific region can carry the Darjeeling name. It is a mark of authenticity and heritage. 🏷️🌱

Darjeeling is delicate and expressive. It is deeply tied to its landscape. It is more than a tea — it’s a quiet lesson in how geography, climate, and tradition shape flavour.️
