🥭 Cupuaçu
🌿 This Amazonian fruit smells like chocolate and tastes like sunshine.
Cupuaçu is a Brazilian tropical fruit native to the Amazon rainforest 🌳🌧️ and a close relative of cacao. It grows on small trees beneath the forest canopy. It thrives in hot, humid conditions. Indigenous communities have long valued it for both food and medicinal use. The fruit is large and oblong, with a thick, woody brown shell that protects a soft, pale pulp inside.
🌸 The flavour of cupuaçu is often described as complex and aromatic. It combines notes of chocolate, pineapple, pear, and citrus 🍫🍍. Its fragrance is especially intense, making it prized not just for taste but also for its aroma. Unlike many tropical fruits, cupuaçu is rarely eaten fresh. Instead, the pulp is used in juices, smoothies, desserts, ice creams, and confectionery 🍨🥤.

🍰 In Brazil, cupuaçu is a popular ingredient in sweets such as mousses, creams, and fillings. Its natural acidity balances sugar beautifully. It is also used in savoury sauces and beverages, showcasing its versatility. The seeds, like those of cacao, can be fermented. They are processed into a product known as cupulate. This product is sometimes used as a chocolate alternative.
🌿 Beyond the kitchen, cupuaçu is well known in cosmetics. Its rich butter — extracted from the seeds — is valued for its moisturizing properties. This dual culinary and cosmetic role has helped cupuaçu gain international attention while remaining deeply tied to its rainforest origins.
🥭 Fragrant, lush, and unmistakably Amazonian — cupuaçu is the rainforest in fruit form.
